The UK's oldest Epee competition, founded in 1928
The London International Open, widely known as The Miller-Hallett, is the UK’s oldest and most storied épée competition. Founded in 1928 by Alexander Miller-Hallett, a distinguished member of The Épée Club, the event was established when he presented a trophy for an international men’s épée competition.
From its earliest days, The Miller-Hallett stood out, not only for the quality of its fencing but for its welcoming spirit. It quickly earned a reputation as one of Europe’s premier events, drawing top-tier competitors from across the globe. The roll of honour includes champions from fencing powerhouses such as France, Sweden, Germany, and the United States.
In 2002, the competition took a significant step toward modernisation when Alda Milner-Barry, the first British women’s épée champion, donated a second trophy, bringing equal recognition to the women’s event and transforming The Miller-Hallett into a truly inclusive, international showcase.
Now held at the Leon Paul Fencing Centre, the UK’s premier fencing venue, the competition continues to thrive under the leadership of Jon Willis and his professional organising team. They have maintained the event’s traditional prestige while delivering a high-level experience for both elite and aspiring fencers. The format is designed to challenge the best while remaining open and welcoming to the full spectrum of the UK’s épée community.
Whether you're chasing medals or just inspired to compete where legends once fenced, The Miller-Hallett remains a landmark event on the British Fencing calendar.
